Cost:
£29,000

Winterbourne St Martin, also known as Martinstown, is a village in Dorset.  At the heart of the village is the hall, in front of it sits the play area for the local community, it was originally a mix of equipment which had come to the end of its life so a new play area was needed - so the local council got in touch.

They wanted a new play area where children of different ages could play together, and the parents could watch. The area is fenced with a picket fence and includes benches, so it’s a great space for families.

The council had funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, so along with a brief they got in touch. After a site visit, and talking about what they like, and don’t like, our design team got to work.

There was space to add two Jungle Clubhouses connected with a bridge, a gangplank, cargo net, slide, and crawl tunnel and the shop activity panel. When it comes to the surfacing there’s lots of options - wet pour, rubber bonded mulch, play bark, sand, but as the council wanted to keep it as natural as possible, we opted for rubber grass mats.  These are a great addition as they not only make the play area safe, but over time the grass will grow through them resulting in them being hidden away (but safe to use with a lawn mowers).

This play area has been installed for a couple of years - hence the well used shop activity panel - and you’ll notice the timber has started to age to a subtle silver colour over time (read more about the timber we use and why).
