How to:

create your secondary school playground

Where do I start?

You’ve been given the project of creating your secondary school’s new play area (or updating the existing one), and if you’ve done this before, great. If not, don’t worry, we’re here to help, especially if this project is in addition to your day-to-day responsibilities.

The first thing we do with any new project is listen to you! You know your secondary school, the kids and what you’d like to achieve better than anyone else, and it’s this we need to hear. Tell us how you’d like the playground to benefit the children and their development, after all, 11-16 year olds will have different needs to those of younger children.

We’re here to listen to you about your school, your objectives, the hurdles that you face, and the space you’d like to create. The more of an unique understanding we have of your school, the greater foundation we’ll have to build something truly special.

It’s at this point we can understand you and what you’d like to achieve. Let’s collaborate to make your secondary school (and play area) stand out from the crowd.

What do we need to know?

Before we get to designing, let's get all these great ideas down on paper. The more we talk, the more we will understand the project and be able to create something truly special.

We ask details, which include:

  • Space and location
  • Age and ability of the children, and their development needs
  • Must haves, wants and wishes
  • Bringing your school and ethos into the design, making it just for you
  • Your time frames, when works for you and when doesn’t
  • Budgets and funding - don’t worry if you haven’t got this in place just yet, we can help with this (and we’ve got some really useful information and tips on our funding page).

Through this process we’ll have a really clear picture of your project, we’ll get it all written down into a detailed brief to make sure we’ve got everything covered. This is a short document to describe all that we have discussed, what your requirements are, what you want to achieve, and the specifics. Something for us to both refer back to.

What will our play area look like?

Following the brief, we’ll design our initial concept and send it through to you. This is where you’ll see our conversations brought to life.  And by listening to you at the beginning of this project, hopefully means we’ll get the design just right for you (although very happy to make any amends).

We’ve found at this point it’s a great idea to share the design with the students, get them excited at the new play area, you never know they may have some really great feedback to share.

You’ve signed off the design, budget is in place and you’ve received really positive feedback, great! The next step is to arrange the install day with you. We’ll always work around you, so let us know when’s good and when isn’t.

How do you build/install your play equipment?

It’s at this point we start to build your new playground in our workshop, the more we do before we install means less disruption on the day.We really hope you and the kids can't wait for the big day to arrive as much as we can, and remember we are flexible around you, in or out of term time, any time of the year, let us know what suits you.

The big day has arrived and our installation team is raring to go. Before we start to build, we’ll layout the playground, think of this as a final check to make sure it’s in the right place. If it’s all good, we’ll get to work and start building your playground

As we mentioned earlier, we’ll always do our best to cause the least amount of disruption, but we can’t promise the kids (and maybe some of the teachers) won’t be taking a look out of the window. (sorry!).

And, just like that, we’re done - your secondary school’s dream playground - over to you kids!

What about wear, tear, and maintenance?

Now the play area is finally ready, and kids are using and abusing it, this is where your need for lasting quality and sturdiness has proven to be a great decision.

To make sure they’ve got as many years of play & enjoyment ahead as possible, thanks to the unrivalled quality of our tradesmen and timber, your new play area benefits from a 12-month guarantee against all workmanship defects and a 20-year guarantee against timber failure. This means a complete piece of mind and knowledge that’ll last for years to come.

However, we’re no dreamers, and as much as it pains us to say it, sometimes, no matter how infrequently, things do go wrong - we know a problem shared is a problem halved - that's why we want you to let us know as soon as possible to make sure we’re there to help resolve the issue. We can provide advice, and resources, or if you’d prefer us to maintain your playground, that’s no problem, we offer maintenance packages to suit your needs.

These are all the things you’d expect when choosing Home Front, we think these should go without saying, but if you’d like to learn more about why we are so trusted and respected in our industry then look no further. But don't just take our word for it - see what are customers have to say as well - check out our reviews & testimonials.
