How to:

create your school playground

Where do I start?

Whether you're a teacher or part of the PTA, you’ve got the task of creating a playground for your school or nursery, and now you are thinking, where do I even start?

It can feel overwhelming, with such a responsibility to get it right. This project may be, in addition to your day job, one more thing on your to-do list, as such we’re here to help.

The first thing we do at the beginning of every project is listen. At this early stage, you set the scene for us to learn, we can talk about playground specifics later, but right now, we simply want to get to know you and your school.

Tell us what's important to your school, your challenges, and the space you’d like to create. We’ll talk about the kids' needs and what's important to them, and the type of play that can develop the imagination of toddlers, or burn off the extra energy of primary kids, or focus on physical education for teenagers.

Together we’ll make your school (and the play area) the talk of the town!

What do we need to know?

Once we are on a first-name basis we can begin talking about the details.

The more we talk, the better we can paint a picture of your space and understand your project.

We’ll go into the details, which includes:

  • Space and location
  • Age and ability of the children
  • Must haves, wants and wishes
  • Bringing your school and ethos into the design, making it just for you
  • Your time frames, when works for you and when doesn’t
  • Budgets and funding - don’t worry if you haven’t got this in place just yet, we can help with this (we’ve got some really useful information and tips on our funding page)

By now, we’ll have a clear understanding of all your requirements which means we can put together the detailed brief. This is a document to describe what we have discussed, all written down to make sure we haven’t missed anything. This is our opportunity to make sure we’re all on the same page, once we’ve all agreed, time for the design!

What will our play area look like?

Using the brief, we’ll draw up an initial concept design and send it back your way.

We’ll work together to review the design, listen to your feedback on what you like, and what you don’t, and make any changes. Once you’ve agreed on the final design, it’s a great opportunity to show the children and their parents what to expect, and get them just as excited as you (and us) are. No doubt there'll be lots of little smiling faces all asking ‘when, when, when?’.

Great news! Everything is now in place from design to budget to the day of the installation.

How do you build/install your play equipment?

It's time for us to get to work and that begins at our workshop. The majority of the build is done before we even get to you (this means we can minimise the disruption on the day).

We really hope you can’t wait for the big day to arrive as much as we can, pop the date in your diary and let the countdown begin!

We’ll start off by placing each part of the playground in situ, this way you’ll be able to picture the size and scope of the build. One final check and we’ll start installing (apologies if some of the kids get distracted and start looking out of the window, that happens a lot!).

And just like that, we’re done!  Kids…over to you!

What about wear, tear, and maintenance?

Now the play area is finally ready, and kids are using and abusing it, this is where your need for lasting quality and sturdiness has proven to be a great decision.

To make sure they’ve got as many years of play & enjoyment ahead as possible, thanks to the unrivalled quality of our tradesmen and timber, your new play area benefits from a 12-month guarantee against all workmanship defects and a 20-year guarantee against timber failure. This means a complete piece of mind and knowledge that’ll last for years to come.

However, we’re no dreamers, and as much as it pains us to say it, sometimes, no matter how infrequently, things do go wrong - we know a problem shared is a problem halved - that's why we want you to let us know as soon as possible to make sure we’re there to help resolve the issue. We can provide advice, and resources, or if you’d prefer us to maintain your playground, that’s no problem, we offer maintenance packages to suit your needs.

These are all the things you’d expect when choosing Home Front, we think these should go without saying, but if you’d like to learn more about why we are so trusted and respected in our industry then look no further. But don't just take our word for it - see what are customers have to say as well - check out our reviews & testimonials.
