There’s something wonderfully bittersweet about the change of seasons. We’re saying goodbye to long, light summer evenings and the freedom of the holidays, while welcoming crisp mornings, crunchy leaves and cosy afternoons. Jumpers come back out, blankets, films, and warm drinks become firm favourites, and suddenly we’re very aware that Halloween is just around the corner and, dare I say it… Christmas isn’t too far behind!
We all love the cosy season, but as the evenings get shorter and colder, it can be tempting for outdoor time to disappear altogether, and screen time to creep up.
That’s why autumn and winter are a great time to get creative about keeping kids active outside. It doesn’t have to mean long walks or hours in the garden. A quick trip to the park, a bike ride, kicking a ball around, or simply getting outside for a bit of fresh air can make a big difference.
Don’t let the weather put you off. Wrap up warm, embrace the puddles and remember that there’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes! Often, children don’t mind the cold or drizzle nearly as much as we think they will.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with coming home, getting into pyjamas and watching a film together. In fact, it sounds pretty perfect to me! The aim isn’t to ban screens or make every evening an outdoor adventure, it’s simply about finding a healthy balance and making movement part of the colder months too.
So this autumn and winter, why not make a little more room for fresh air, crunchy leaves, muddy boots and rosy cheeks, before heading home for a hot chocolate and a cosy evening inside?
Sometimes, the best way to enjoy a cosy night in is to have earned it outside first.

Of course, getting outside is even easier when adventure is right on your doorstep! With a climbing frame in the garden, children have the freedom to climb, swing, explore and burn off some energy outdoors whenever it suits them... no matter how short the evenings become.
