Shakes & checks

Shakes and checks are natural cracks in wood caused by its reaction to the environment. Because timber is a natural material, it undergoes a constant cycle of change:

  • Warm/dry weather: The wood shrinks, causing small cracks to open.
  • Cold/wet weather: The wood absorbs moisture and expands, naturally closing those cracks.

Essentially, these splits are a normal sign of the wood breathing as it adapts to seasonal shifts in temperature and humidity.

Surface mildew image

Surface mildew

Occasionally, you may notice surface mildew, the first thing to mention is there is nothing to worry about.  Due to the pressure treated timber we use, it doesn’t affect the structural integrity of the timber in any way (you can read more about the timber here). It’s superficial and more common in warmer months when you may see it appear.

It can simply be treated with any household mildew spray (or white vinegar in a spray bottle).
