The sensory power of timber

At Home Front, we’ve spent over 25 years handcrafting play spaces that don’t just look beautiful, but truly work for the children who use them. While brightly coloured plastic has long been the industry standard for playgrounds, we have always championed the use of high-quality timber.

For neurodivergent learners, those with ADHD, Autism, or Sensory Processing Disorder, the choice between natural wood and synthetic plastic isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating an environment where they can thrive.

A natural insulator

Plastic can be unpredictable. It’s often freezing to the touch in winter and scorching hot in the summer sun. For a child with sensory sensitivities, these sharp temperature shifts can be off-putting.

Timber is a natural insulator. It maintains a much more consistent temperature, offering a warm and grounding tactile experience. The subtle, organic texture of wood provides what we call "soft" sensory input, enough to engage a child’s sense of touch without reaching the point of overstimulation.

Playground acoustics

One of the most overlooked aspects of playground design is acoustics. Plastic surfaces are hard and reflective; they bounce sound & light around, creating a noisy, chaotic environment that can quickly lead to sensory overload.

Our premium timber is naturally porous, which helps to dampen the sounds of play. For a learner who struggles to filter out background noise, a wooden play structure creates a much calmer "audio landscape," allowing them to focus on the physical joy of movement.

Natural patterns

We believe play equipment should enhance a landscape, not distract from it. Many plastic sets use high-contrast, primary colours intended to grab attention, but for some children, this "visual noise" can be overwhelming.

Natural wood features "fractal patterns", the organic grain and knots that occur in nature. Studies show that these patterns naturally lower stress levels and reduce anxiety. By using timber, we create a visually serene environment that encourages "rest and digest" rather than "fight or flight," helping children feel safe as they push their physical boundaries.

Building for every ability

Since 1996, our mission has been to create play areas for children of all ages and abilities. By choosing natural materials, we aren't just building a climbing frame; we are designing a sensory-friendly sanctuary.

Whether it’s for a primary school SEND department or a family garden, timber remains the gold standard for a calm, focused, and inclusive play experience.
