SAFER SURFACING

EN1177 sets out the requirements for playground safer surfacing both under and around the play equipment you install. And surfacing materials have to be certified for Critical Fall Height (CFH).

Unfortunately the cost of a safer surfacing installation can sometimes be as much as the play equipment itself, but the correct choice of safer surfacing will help create a cost-effective, long lasting and legal environment for your play area.

WOOD CHIP

Wood Chip (and Bark) Playground Surfacing is quite a cost-effective system with a natural look. It is easy to install and to maintain. The two words; bark and wood chip, often get inter-used but they are not technically the same type of product. Usually both products are a by-product of timber processing, but bark is often just that – the stripped off bark from logs. So you will see enormous differences in quality and texture. Some suppliers will grade their product according to size but not all. this is normally the cheapest solution and local saw mills often provide the most competitive prices.

GRASS MATS

Grass mats are a low-cost surfacing option. They look natural and are easy to install. They are made from soft rubber with an open lattice design. This allows the grass to grow through the holes, so in a short period of time the mats themselves all but disappear. They have the added benefit of protecting the grass surface, so it is even possible to sow grass seed and for the grass to grow without being destroyed by the playground usage.

RUBBER TILES

Rubber tiles are a long-standing solution to playground surfacing requirements. They are slightly less expensive than Wet Pour, and they come in a variety of colour and pattern options.

If you pick rubber tiles as a surfacing option you will need a solid base and to make sure that the surface is level and true.

They need a little more maintenance than some other surfaces as dirt can collect in the grooves. But they are easy to extend if you increase your playground size.

BONDED MULCH

An increasingly popular surfacing for playgrounds. Used in conjunction with a permeable membrane it can be applied directly on top of soil, grass, crushed stone and even tarmac. It is made up of synthetic rubber chippings, held in place by a strong, durable resin binder. Available in a large selection of colours and is easily repairable.

WET POUR

The most popular of playground surfacing available and is what most people think of when they think of soft surfacing in play areas. Wet Pour offers a seamless covering in a choice of colours and, in the hands of an expert installer, the option of elaborate designs.

Wet Pour consists of rubber crumb which is held in place by durable resin binder. There are two grades of “crumb” – a coarse size which forms the base, and a finer size which is used for the top coat.
