In 2019, a group of parents on the Isle of Coll, a small island off the west coast of Scotland, decided to build a new playground for their children after the old one had been removed. With a small local population of just 160 people, this play area would not only provide a safe place for children to play but also help bring the community closer together.
Before the new playground, there were no proper play facilities for children on the island. Local parent Alison Jones shared in an article with The Herald Scotland, how the lack of play space impacted her son Harris and other young children, leaving them without a place to meet and interact with peers.
The pandemic did cause delays, but the committee stayed focused on fundraising. Through events like dances and quizzes, they were able to raise enough money to purchase equipment and kickstart the building of the play area.
Building the play area became a hands-on, self-installation project led by the community. Volunteers from the community came together to dig, build, and set up the park.
The finished play area is a central gathering spot for local and visiting children. It provides a safe space for kids to play and make new friends, helping to develop their social skills.
